April 19th MOLD (L) 15 - 3

Mold won the North-East Wales Cup with a tough, 15-3, victory over rivals Wrexham.  Wrexham started the better team, but it was Mold who claimed the first try and took a 5-0 lead.   This lead was further extended before half-time via a penalty and a converted try, and this gave Mold a 15-0 lead.  Any chance of a Wrexham fight-back was thwarted when one of their players was sent-off, harshly, before the interval.  Despite their numerical disadvantage, for long periods of the second half Wrexham were the better team, but all they had to show for it was a Jonny Davies penalty and Mold closed out the win.

April 19th Rhyl (W) 34 - 0

Wrexham under 16’s progressed to the North-East Wales Cup Final, with a 41-0 triumph at Rhyl.  The visitors, although they never played the sparkling rugby they are capable of, did enough to claim the victory and reach the final where they will either play Mold or Ruthin.   Wrexham’s tries came via wingers Ryan Evans, Ross Lloyd and James Newnes, with Iain Elrick and Aron Hughes also crossing the line.  Scrum-half Tom Lea grabbed a brace of tries, and he also added 3 conversions.

April 4th St. Pauls

IRISH TOUR

Edenderry

(L) 22 - 18

(W) 19 - 5

Wrexham Under 16’s went on a successful tour to Ireland last weekend, playing two games against St. Paul’s School and Edenderry RFC.   In their first game against St. Paul’s, they went down to a narrow 22-18 loss against an older side.  With a few minutes to go, the tourists looked to have won it via a Tom Lea penalty, which gave them an 18-17 lead, but also gave St. Paul’s enough time to secure the final, winning try, and take victory.  Wrexham had taken an early lead through tries from Jonny Davies, Dave Nelson and Anthony Hughes, before St. Paul’s fought back.

In the second game of the tour, a vastly improved Wrexham performance was enough to give them the win against a good Edenderry side, 19-5.   Playing with the wind in the first half, Edenderry dominated, but thanks to some last-gasp Wrexham defending; they only came away with 1 try, and a 5-0 lead at half-time.   As the sides changed ends at half-time, so did the dynamic of the match, with Wrexham playing some of their best rugby of the season to dominate the second period.   They pulled away from Edenderry thanks to a double from Jonny Davies and a score from Tom Lea, who also added 2 conversions.

Mar. 29th NEWTOWN (W) 34 - 0

Wrexham progressed to the semi-finals of the North-East Wales Cup with a 34-0 victory over Newtown.  Wrexham, although they endured some nervous moments, never looked like losing the game and scored 6 tries to book their passage onto the next round.  Flanker James Price led the way with a double, and scores from Scott Jones, Ross Lloyd, Nathan Kaitani-Jones and Jonny Davies sealed the win, with 2 conversions from Tom Lea.

Mar. 22nd NEW BRIGHTON (W) 27 - 19

Wrexham edged a hard-fought encounter with New Brighton to come a way with a 27-19 victory.   Wrexham made a lightning start and were 17-0 by the end of the first half, due to tries from Nathan Kaitaini Jones (2) and Dave Nelson.  However, with the wind in their favour in the second half, New Brighton came back into the game with 2 tries but Wrexham closed the game out via scores from Iain Elrick and Ross Lloyd.  Even a late try for New Brighton could not affect the outcome of the game and Wrexham secured a tough win.

Mar. 15th NEWCASTLE U L (W) 29 - 10

Wrexham recorded their 5th straight win with a hard-fought 29-10 victory over Newcastle-Under-Lyme.  Wrexham scored first through fly-half Nathan Kaitaini-Jones, and when Tom Lea added the conversion they had a 7-0 lead.  However, Newcastle struck back almost immediately to reduce the deficit to just 2.  This seemed to spark Wrexham into life as they added another try through winger James Newnes.  After the break, Wrexham extended their lead through Dave Nelson and another try from Nathan Kaitaini-Jones before Newcastle grabbed a consolation try.  The last say, however, went to Wrexham thanks to centre Scott Jones crossing in the corner.

Mar. 8th Ruthin (W) 54 - 0

Wrexham Under 16’s chalked up another victory, 54-0, as they travelled to Denbigh.  Wrexham took an early lead, as captain Matthew Evans pounced on a loose ball to open the scoring.  After some spirited resistance from the home side, Wrexham’s superior handling in the backs began to show and they added nine further tries.  The additional scores came courtesy of braces from Ross Lloyd, Scott Jones and Nathan Kaitani-Jones, with Gruff Jones, Iain Elrick and Ryan Partington also crossing the line.

Mar. 1st HOYLAKE (W) 46 - 5

Wrexham under 16’s secured another victory on Sunday, beating their cross-border neighbours Hoylake, 46-5.    Wrexham started sluggishly, but they quickly found their rhythm with two tries putting them in the ascendancy.  However, Hoylake capitalised on Wrexham errors to respond with a score of their own to reduce the deficit to a single try.  This seemed to stir Wrexham into a response and before half-time they had added 3 more tries to grab a commanding lead.    After the break, Wrexham secured 3 more tries to put the game beyond doubt.    Wrexham’s points came from a hat-trick via Ross Lloyd and braces from Matthew Evans and Jonny Davies.  Patrick Richards also scored his first try for the club with Tom Lea kicking 3 conversions.

Feb. 15th Rhyl (W) 62 - 0

Wrexham completed a 10 try romp at home against Rhyl.  The hosts took control from the outset and soon grabbed the initiative through 2 tries from outside centre Scott Jones.  Rhyl put up some spirited resistance and came close to breaching the Wrexham line on a few occasions, but the home side’s dominance up front took it’s toll and they added a further 8 tries.  Jonny Davies grabbed a hat-trick, and captain Matthew Evans, Jak Roberts, Iain Elrick, Anthony Hughes and Ross Lloyd also scored to complete the rout.  Scrum half, Tom Lea, added 6 conversions to secure the 62-0 triumph.

Feb. 1st Welshpool (W) 45 - 0

Wrexham secured a comfortable 45-0 win at home against Welshpool.  The home side started quickly with two tries in the first five minutes and after that, Wrexham never allowed their visitors a look-in.    They breached the Welshpool defensive line with some slick handling, and they scored a further seven tries as the game progressed.  Winger Ross Lloyd led the rout as he ran in a hat trick, and tries from captain Matthew Evans, centres James Price and Jonny Davies, Iain Elrick, Ryan Evans and Jac Roberts followed.  However, all 9 conversions were missed by an assortment of players.
